The "prototype" handwoven fabric is woven with cotton warp yarn, acrylic weft yarn, and supplemented with 3 colors of EL wire and powered by a 12v inverter. Additional fabric will be woven with other colors of EL wire, a Sparkfun Sequencer (contains an Arduino) will determine the pattern and order in which the wires will be illuminated, and it will be powered by a 12v inverter. There will be demonstrations of spinning yarn and weaving on a rigid heddle loom throughout the weekend. The free hands-on/takeaway activity will involve using a plastic sewing needle to "weave/embroider" a sparkly yarn and sequins on a small piece of fabric to simulate weaving with EL wire and adding LEDs to enhance the fabric even more.
We mostly spin yarn from fiber, but we also knit and weave. We include new tools (EL wire, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, particle photon, RFID tags, sensors, LEDs, etc.) with traditional techniques to make e-textiles.
